V i rtually all reactions in the body are mediated by enzymes, which are protein catalysts that increase the rate of reactions without being changed in the ove rall process. Among the many biologic reactions that are energetically possibl e, enzymes selectively channel reactants (called substrates) into useful pathway s. Enzymes thus direct all metabolic eve n t s. This chapter examines the nature of these catalytic molecules and their mechanism of action.
